What to Bring and Wear for Your AST 1 Course
We will not be traveling far on this field day. Come prepared to stand around in cold temperatures. The following list should keep you warm so you can focus on your learning.
What to bring:
Park Pass
A pack (30 liter +) which is large enough to carry a shovel, probe, layers you will take off when you warm up, plus your lunch, water/tea, and high calorie snacks
Snowshoes, skis with skins, or split-board with skins
warm sorel-style boots for snowshoes (no hiking boots or running shoes)
ski poles with snow baskets
Winter hat, mitts and neck buff/scarf, hand warmers
Sunglasses, googles if you have them
Sunscreen and lip block
1 liter of water and/or thermos of tea
Lunch and high calorie snacks
Avalanche and weather forecast for our field day area
What to wear for the day:
Top Layer:
Two long sleeved Merino wool or similar (synthetic, not cotton)
A warm layer such as a fleece jacket or wool sweater
Insulated down jacket with hood
Waterproof jacket with hood that fits over down jacket
Bottom Layer:
Insulated pants such as ski pants.
Moreno wool or similar long johns (two pairs if the temperatures plummet)
Foot wear:
Sorel style winter snow boot or similar will keep your feet warm if you’re travelling on snowshoes; toes tend to get really cold in hiking boots.
Warm socks. A liner sock inside a thicker sock is an age old trick for keeping your feet warm and blister free.
If you are prone to blisters, please apply blister bandages to the areas of your foot where you normally blister.
Snowshoes, ski or split board and ski poles:
Please adjust your gear to fit your boots before you arrive. Please make sure your ski poles have larger snow baskets.
Additional notes:
Hike Banff will have probes, shovels, and transceivers for your use for the day.
