What to Bring for Your Day Hike
Mountain weather can change quickly, and go from being quite lovely and warm to very cold indeed. Dressing in layers is the way to deal with these changing conditions. You can add more layers as you cool down, or take off a layer as you warm up.
What to bring in your day pack:
A waterproof jacket and waterproof pants
An insulated jacket that stuffs small (down jacket is nice…Yes, this is the summer hiking list)
Winter hat and mitts and neck buff (Yes, for summer hikes!)
Sunscreen, lip block, and sunhat
1 liter of water or more
Camera
What to wear for the day:
Top Layer:
A short sleeved Moreno wool or similar (synthetic, not cotton)
A long sleeved Moreno wool or similar (synthetic, not cotton) over the above short sleeve
Bottom Layer:
Quick dry pants. You may enjoy having zip off legs
Footwear:
Waterproofed, broken in hiking boots with a good sole will be your best choice
A sturdy walking shoe, runner or light hiking boot, all with good soles will work but you should expect them to get muddy and wet, and they won’t offer as much support over uneven terrain.
Hiking socks. Sometimes the thickness of the sock makes all the difference for whether your feet hurt or you are getting blisters. Hiking sock thickness can be thin, medium thickness or thick. If unsure what you like, try the thinner side of hiking socks so you have room in your footwear as your feet swell with heat and exuration.
If you are prone to blisters, please apply blister bandages to the areas of your foot where you normally blister.
What to bring for food:
Bring a full lunch and snacks for your all day hike. We’d be happy to provide you with recommendations on where to get a great sandwich.
